YOGA and HIKING in SWITZERLAND

“I feel that meditation is not confined to a particular time or place. It can go on all the time, anywhere and everywhere.”

Yoga & Hiking Retreat in Switzerland Returns in 2011

Yoga Vacation in Pontresina, Switzerland July 7-14, 2011

We will travel to Pontresina in the Upper Engadine Valley, the sunniest part of Switzerland, where we will stay at the Hotel Rosatsch. This 4-star hotel has just been renovated and will provide a lovely and comfortable base for the week. The trip’s co-leaders will be Sandra Uyterhoeven and Randall Krause.

Segatini Tracks

This year we will track the footsteps of Switzerland's favorite late 19th century artist, Giovanni Segantini (1858 - 1899). Relatively unknown outside of Switzerland, this painter of landscapes and life in the Engadine region of the Swiss Alps was part of the avant garde art movement in France and all of Europe. Segantini's vibrant paintings become more alive and meaningful in their native surroundings. Early in the week we'll visit the collection of his paintings at the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz. During the week we will walk his trails and view alpine landscapes through the artist's eyes.

* See also the chapter on Yoga/Hiking in Switzerland in the book, Yoga Vacations: A Guide to International Yoga Retreats by Annalisa Cunningham, John Muir Publications, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1999.

“Each morning, before embarking on a hiking excursion, I would eagerly look forward to our early morning yoga session. Yoga helped prepare our bodies and our minds for whatever lay ahead for the day. For some it was the challenge of traversing, somewhat precariously, across glaciers. For others, more sedate walks exploring the beautiful mountain vistas of the Alps seemed the wiser choice. On occasion, yoga sessions were held outdoors in the early morning mountain air. The wonderfully stimulating yet relaxing postures of yoga took on a new, almost spiritual meaning during those times.”
