A HIKE TO ‘THE LOVELIEST LITTLE PLACE ON EARTH’

That is how The Boston Globe described our trip to Samedan.Yoga to tune up the body, mind, and spirit; hiking in the magnificent Alps; elegant accommodations at the four-star Hotel Quadratscha – these are key ingredients of an unforgettable vacation in the sunniest part of Switzerland.

SEGANTINI TRACKS

This year we will track the footsteps of Switzerland's favorite late 19th century artist, Giovanni Segantini (1858 - 1899). Relatively unknown outside of Switzerland, this painter of landscapes and life in the Engadine region of the Swiss Alps was part of the avant garde art movement in France and all of Europe. Segantini's vibrant paintings become more alive and meaningful in their native surroundings. Early in the week we'll visit the collection of his paintings at the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz. During the week we will walk his trails and view alpine landscapes through the artist's eyes.

For more information on the museum and the artist, go to www.segantini-museum.ch/

SETTING, ACCESSIBILITY, AND THE WEEK’S PROGRAM

Setting: Samedan (altitude 1728 m. /5610 ft.) is a charming village located in the Canton of Graubünden in the upper Engadine Valley in southeastern Switzerland. Swiss German and Romansch are the official languages. It is the starting point for many great hikes.

Accessibility: The village is about a three-hour train ride from Zurich airport.

Program: We will usually begin the day with a yoga class, followed by a hearty Swiss breakfast. Our mountain guide, Gerhard Franz, will lead our walks along the Segantini tracks, which include some of the most beautiful scenery in the areas around Sils Maria, Maloja, the Lake of Cavloc, Muottas Murajl and the Segantini Hut and more. Along the way Gerhard will point out habitats of Alpine flora and fauna. (He is usually very adept at finding rare wild flowers, such as Edelweiss.) Gerhard asks that hikers have the ability to walk at least at a moderate pace over the trails.

Lunch may be a picnic by a waterfall or a mountain lake, a picnic prepared by the hotel, or food bought at a shopping trip to the local market. Or, we may opt to have lunch on the terrace of a restaurant along our route. After returning to our hotel in the late afternoon, enjoy a swim in the hotel's large heated pool or a sauna or steam bath before dinner.

Our program offers assistance for local cultural events, such as concerts, tracitional seasonal festivals, and golfing. If you wish to hike on your own, Gerhard has many suggestions.
